Effective Horsemanship Clinics

These clinics are designed to take some of the mystery and commercialism out of horse training. With so many very large personalitie selling horsepeople the latest and greatest tools and techniques, it is time to look at what they all have in common.

Horsemanship Level I will consist of learning to move and activate different parts of the horse. Isolating movements is the beginning of a truly fine horse. Activities will start on the ground and progress to riding as horses and riders are ready. By the end of the clinic riders should be able to participate in a short trail ride using techniques they have learned.

Horsemanship Level II will emphasize refinement of the basic movement patterns designed to create a "handy" horse. Basic rope work, opening and closing gates, gait transitions, beginning collection and preliminary cow work will be covered. At the completion of level II riders may choose to participate in basic cow work while maintaining correct movements and carriage.

“My clinic experience was very eye opening and interesting. I learned the importance of the moving different parts of the horse and how each part comes into play in the end result. The best part was moving the cow down the fence and properly aligning the horse according to the cows movements. The clinic was very beneficial to me and my horse and we would love to attend another”

Buddy
“Buddy was not handled except for halter breaking and a few hoof trimmings. He was a little flighty and you had to be careful not to move too fast around him. He had a nice mind though.

After about 40 days with Don he came back completely calm. He had taken him to the mountains, roped some steers and had seen some country. He sidepasses, stops well and turns great. He is extremely quiet and calm. Don has such a quiet, gentle way with horses. I am extremely satisfied with the results.

In closing I would say Don is quiet and calm with the horses, but has a way of getting the horse's respect and everything the horse has to offfer.”

Doc
In December 2005 I bought two mustangs off the range. When the colts arrived home they were like two whitetailed deer in the round pen. Extremely skittish!

Don took the task of halter breaking for me. After one session he was petting them and by the 3rd and 4th session we were picking up their feet and leading them around. This year (2007) Don has been riding Doc on short trail rides. With Don's quiet patience he has been very successful with Doc. Don is very inquisitive and level-headed when working with my colts.
